If you've ever bought a "brain support" supplement and felt absolutely nothing, I want to tell you why. It's probably not you. It's the label.

Here's the trick the supplement industry has been running for years, and most people never catch it because it's hiding in plain sight.

The Lion's Mane Problem... or take your pick ingredient problem

Lion's mane mushroom is one of the most well-researched nootropics out there. The clinical research showing cognitive benefit uses doses around 500mg, sometimes more, taken consistently.

Walk down the supplement aisle or scroll Amazon and you'll find dozens of "brain boosting" products listing lion's mane right there on the label. Feels credible. Feels science-backed.

Now look at the actual amount. 50mg. Sometimes even less.

That's one tenth of the dose that's actually been shown to do anything. The ingredient is real. The benefit is fictional. The company gets to put a research-backed ingredient on their packaging, market the associated benefits in their copy, and deliver a product that was never going to work in the first place.

This isn't a gray area. This is a brand betting that you won't read the actual clinical research, and counting on the placebo effect plus your own hope to do the heavy lifting their formula can't.

The Proprietary Blend Trick

If underdosing is the first sleight of hand, proprietary blends are the second, and honestly the sneakier one.

A proprietary blend lets a company list ingredients without disclosing how much of each one is actually in the product. So you'll see a label that says "Focus Blend: 500mg" followed by six or seven ingredient names. Sounds substantial. Five hundred milligrams of good stuff, right?

Except that 500mg is split across all of those ingredients, and there is no requirement to tell you the breakdown. In most cases, the bulk of that blend is the cheapest filler in the mix, things like rice hull or maltodextrin, with the actual active ingredients making up a tiny fraction of the total.

The secrecy isn't protecting some valuable formula. There's no trade secret in a lion's mane and ashwagandha blend, that combination is everywhere. The secrecy exists specifically to hide the gap between what's promised and what's delivered.

Why This Matters More for the Women I Talk To

I spent real money, money I could have spent on literally anything else, on supplements that should have worked based on their labels and didn't touch my brain fog at all. At the time I assumed it was me. Maybe my case was too severe. Maybe supplements just weren't going to be the answer.

Next time you pick up a supplement, do the boring thing. Look past the ingredient list and go find the actual milligram amount. Then go look up what dose the research behind that ingredient actually used. If there's a ten times gap between the two, you already know what's going to happen when you take it. Nothing.
