Why Midlife Is the Perfect Time to Say Yes to Opportunity
Right now, I’m in Utah/Nevada.
My husband has an opportunity on the table. One that could shift our future in ways we did not plan for. So we are here doing the research. Walking neighborhoods. Running numbers. Asking uncomfortable questions. Imagining a version of life that was not even on our radar a few months ago.
Is it exciting? Yes.
Is it unsettling? Also yes.
The kind of unsettling that makes you want to close the laptop, go home, and pretend the decision does not exist.
And that is exactly why I want to talk about it.
Because opportunity rarely feels stable at first. It feels disruptive.
What Is An Opportunity, Really?
We often think opportunity is something obvious. A promotion. A financial breakthrough. A guaranteed win.
But real opportunity is far more subtle.
An opportunity is an invitation to expand.
It is not a promise. It is not a guarantee. It is simply a doorway that asks:
Are you willing to grow?
Opportunity might look like:
-
A leadership role you are not sure you are ready for
-
A move that stretches your comfort zone
-
A health shift that forces you to pay attention
-
A business idea you keep dismissing
-
A difficult conversation you know needs to happen
Opportunity does not show up as comfort.
It shows up as possibility.
And possibility requires courage.
The Two Choices We Always Have
When something new presents itself, especially in midlife, we have two options.
We can lean in with curiosity.
Or we can fight it because it threatens what we have built.
Curiosity says:
Let me gather data.
Let me explore before deciding.
Let me see what this teaches me.
Fear says:
Protect what you have.
Do not risk it.
Stay where it is predictable.
Neither choice guarantees outcome.
But only one builds confidence.
That's worth repeating, listen to that... Only One Builds Confidence!!
Why Midlife Is Actually The Best Time For Opportunity
Here is something I believe deeply.
Midlife is not a liability. It is an advantage.
By this stage, you have:
Experience.
Emotional intelligence.
Pattern recognition.
Resilience.
Discernment.
Hard earned wisdom.
You have already navigated failure. Pressure. Responsibility. Reinvention.
So why do we hesitate more now?
Because we have more to lose.
We have built careers.
We have reputations.
We have stability.
We have families depending on us.
We have grown.
And growth creates attachment.
There is more at stake now than there was at twenty five.
But here is the beauty in that.
If you have already grown this much, you already know how to grow more.
You already know how to research.
How to pivot.
How to adjust.
How to recover.
The skills required to make the most of midlife are the same skills that got you here.
We hesitate not because we are incapable.
We hesitate because we understand risk.
That awareness is not weakness. It is wisdom.
But wisdom should inform decisions, not paralyze them.
What Happens When You Take The Scary Route
When you choose curiosity over avoidance, something powerful happens.
You gain clarity.
Even if the answer is no, you stop wondering.
You build self trust.
You show yourself that you are willing to look.
You increase confidence.
Confidence is not born from certainty. It is built from action.
You reduce regret.
Regret rarely comes from trying. It comes from avoiding.
You expand your identity.
You begin to see yourself as adaptable, not fragile.
You strengthen decision making.
Each big evaluation sharpens your discernment.
Even if the opportunity is not the right one, you walk away stronger than when you started.
The Opportunity I Never Asked For
A few years ago, I was handed an opportunity I did not want.
Brain fog.
Exhaustion.
Mood shifts.
A creeping fear that I was losing my edge.
For a high achieving woman, that feels threatening.
I could have ignored it. Powered through. Blamed stress. Blamed age.
Instead, I got curious.
I researched ingredients.
I studied absorption.
I learned about stacking.
I experimented.
That curiosity became MyUnMess.
HeadStrong was never supposed to be a business. It was my attempt to solve my own problem. To support my brain strategically instead of randomly guessing with bottles on my counter.
What started as disruption became direction.
What felt like decline became refinement.
And the women who began using it told me something that reinforced everything I believed.
“I feel clear again.”
“I’m sleeping better.”
“I’m calmer.”
“I feel like myself.”
That is the ripple effect of leaning into opportunity instead of resisting it.
Opportunity Does Not Always Look Exciting
Sometimes opportunity looks like:
A symptom.
A relocation conversation.
A career pivot.
A difficult truth.
Sometimes it looks like discomfort.
But discomfort is often the doorway to expansion.
The version of you that exists five years from now will be shaped by whether you leaned in or shut down.
So Let Me Ask You
What opportunity is quietly sitting in your life right now? I'd love to hear about it, email or DM me!
Is it your health?
Your career?
Your relationship?
An idea you have been sitting on?
You do not have to commit today.
You just have to get curious.
Gather information.
Ask better questions.
Remove emotion from the first step.
Curiosity first. Decision second.
That is what we are doing here in Utah/Nevada.
That is what I did with my health.
Midlife is not the time to shrink.
It is the time to refine, recalibrate, and expand with intention.
You already know how to grow.
The question is simply this:
Will you?
With Gratitude,
Sue
