Stop Wasting Money on Supplements That Don't Work: 10 Things to Check Before You Buy
By Sue Bartel, Founder of MyUnMess
I stood in that supplement aisle more times than I can count.
Walls of bottles. Labels packed with words that sounded impressive. Promises I desperately wanted to believe. I had brain fog so thick I couldn't finish a sentence. I was exhausted before the day started. I was running a business, raising kids, trying to hold everything together on the outside while quietly falling apart on the inside.
So I bought the supplements. One after another. Month after month.
And I felt absolutely nothing.
I had so much shame around it. Like what is wrong with me? Why can't I just get this right? I thought I was the common denominator problem. I thought maybe my brain was just... broken.
OMG, I was so wrong.
The problem wasn't me. The problem was what I was buying.
It took me years... and a lot of wasted money... to understand that the supplement industry is largely unregulated, and most products are designed to look good on a shelf, not to actually work in your body. Once I figured that out, everything changed.
I'm writing this post because I don't want you to go through what I went through. So here are the 10 things I now check before I buy any supplement... and the things I made sure HeadStrong passed before I ever put my name on it.
1. Are the Ingredients Actually Proven?
This sounds obvious but most people skip it entirely. Just because an ingredient sounds impressive doesn't mean there's real science behind it.
What to look for: peer-reviewed, published research. Not one study... multiple independent studies from different research groups. And the brand should be able to tell you exactly where that research came from. If they can't? Walk away.
2. Is the Dose Actually Effective?
This one is the supplement industry's best kept dirty secret. A "clinical dose" means the amount that was actually used in the study that got results. Brands know this. So some of them put just enough of an ingredient to list it on the label... but nowhere near enough to do anything in your body.
Watch out for "proprietary blends." That's often code for: we're hiding the amounts because you wouldn't buy it if you knew how little is actually in here.
You deserve to know exactly what you're putting in your body and exactly how much.
3. What Are the Fillers Hiding?
Here's something that genuinely shocked me when I learned it: up to 30-60% of many supplements is filler. You are literally paying for chalk, binding agents, and synthetic dyes.
Common fillers to watch for: magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide, and artificial colors. Some of these can cause bloating, digestive distress, and brain fog... the exact opposite of what you're trying to fix.
Always read the "Other Ingredients" section of the label. If you can't pronounce half of what's listed, put it back.
4. Is It Third-Party Tested?
Supplement labels in North America are largely unregulated. What's printed on the bottle doesn't legally have to match what's actually inside it. That's not me being dramatic... that's just the reality of this industry.
Third-party testing means an independent lab has verified that the ingredients and doses listed are actually in the bottle. Look for certification from NSF, USP, Informed Sport, or BSCG.
No seal? That brand is grading its own homework. And you're the one paying for it.
5. Where Are the Ingredients Sourced?
"Natural" on a label means almost nothing without knowing where the ingredients actually came from. Ingredients sourced from unregulated regions can contain heavy metals, pesticides, and contaminants that can make things worse, not better.
Look for brands that source from GMP-certified (Good Manufacturing Practice) facilities and can speak to their full supply chain. Your brain and body deserve clean inputs.
6. Are There Undisclosed Ingredients or Allergens?
There's a big difference between a supplement that secretly contains ingredients and one that is upfront about every single thing in the formula and exactly why it's there.
Some supplements contain caffeine, gluten, soy, or dairy and never mention it clearly on the label. That's a problem. Not because these ingredients are inherently bad... but because you deserve to know exactly what you're taking and why.
Caffeine, for example, has solid research behind it for cognitive function and mental clarity when used at the right dose. HeadStrong contains caffeine intentionally and transparently, because at a clinical dose it genuinely supports the brain energy and focus our formula is built around. That's a very different thing from a brand sneaking it in to give you a jolt and make you think the product is "working."
Always read the full label including the allergen disclosure. Ask the brand directly if you have sensitivities. And if they can't give you a straight answer about what's in their product and why... that's your answer right there.
7. Does the Formula Make Biological Sense?
More is not better. Throwing 40 ingredients into a capsule doesn't make a supplement more effective... it makes it cheaper to underdose everything while looking impressive on the label.
A focused formula with 6 to 10 well-researched ingredients at clinical doses will outperform a "kitchen sink" blend every single time.
Ask yourself: does this brand know why each ingredient is in here? Can they explain the mechanism? Can they tell you what each ingredient actually does in your body? If they can't, they're selling you marketing, not science.
8. Is the Brand Transparent and Reachable?
You have a question. You've tried three times to find an answer on their website. There's no phone number, no real email, just a chatbot and a return policy designed to make you give up.
A brand that stands behind their product has a real human you can actually talk to. Check: do they respond to emails? Are there real reviews with real names and real stories? Is the founder a real person with a real reason for building this?
Transparency isn't a bonus feature. It's the baseline.
9. Does the Price Reflect the Quality?
I know the instinct. You're already spending so much. You see the $15 option and think maybe it's just as good.
It isn't. The math doesn't work. Quality ingredients, clinical doses, GMP-certified sourcing, and third-party testing all cost money. A $15 supplement covering 30 days is mathematically impossible to contain real doses of anything meaningful.
That doesn't mean the most expensive option is automatically the best. But it does mean you need to understand what you're actually paying per clinical dose... not per bottle.
Stop buying cheap and hoping for a miracle. Invest in something that's actually built to work.
10. Does It Pass the "Would I Recommend It" Test?
This is the question I ask myself about HeadStrong every single day.
If a woman came to me... exhausted, foggy, quietly falling apart, willing to try one more thing... would I hand her this bottle with full confidence?
If the answer isn't an immediate yes, something needs to change.
Hold every brand to this standard. Including mine.
The Honest Truth
I built HeadStrong because I was that woman staring at the supplement shelf, not knowing who to trust.
I wasn't looking for a magic pill. I knew those didn't exist. I was just looking for something that was honest about what it contained, backed by real research, dosed at levels that actually worked, and made by a brand I could actually reach if I had a question.
That's what I built. And I made it specifically for women like us... high-achieving midlife women who are quietly struggling and have been told we're fine when we are clearly not.
